Insurance and coverage when you rent a car in Nicaragua

Every rental includes Mandatory Third-Party Liability Insurance. It applies when the competent authority declares the driver of the rented vehicle responsible for the accident, with these limits:

• Death, disability or injury to one person: up to US$2,500.
• Death, disability or injury to two or more people: up to US$5,000 in total.
• Property damage to third parties: up to US$2,500.

It does not protect damage to the rented vehicle and does not cover theft, total loss, glass, tires or medical expenses of the driver or passengers. If damage to third parties exceeds those limits, the difference is not covered.

Gold coverage costs US$15 per day or US$250 per month and protects against collisions with other vehicles, with posts, houses or other fixed objects, and with animals. For covered damage LAGO pays 80% and you pay 20%, with a minimum share of US$300 regardless of the category. Your share is deducted from the security deposit.

Without Gold, you are responsible for damage to the rented vehicle. Gold does not cover damage from misuse, negligence or breach of contract, and LAGO does not offer 100% protection or zero-deductible coverage.

With Gold coverage, in case of theft or total loss the customer pays 30% of the replacement value of the vehicle.

• Glass protection, US$3 per day: covers damage to or breakage of all glass in the vehicle: windshield, rear window, side windows and other original glass.
• Tire protection, US$5 per day: covers punctures, blowouts, repair, and replacement when the tire cannot be repaired. It does not cover the rims.
• Additional driver, US$2.50 per day: included free with Gold coverage.

Your share of covered damage is deducted from this deposit.
